
Dr. Bing Yan joined the group as a research staff in April 2025. His work is focusing on ultrafast laser processing and chemical etching for glass waveguide fabrication.
In his previous research at University of Aberdeen, his work focused on cutting-edge applications in optics and photonics. With a diverse range of research interests spanning optical tweezers, multi-mode fibre wavefront shaping and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), he has made significant contributions to these fields.
He completed his PhD at Bangor University in 2018. His research cantered on particle lens technology, exploring its potential for super-resolution imaging and laser direct nano-marking. This innovative work demonstrated the versatility of particle lenses in enhancing optical imaging capabilities and enabling precise material processing at the nanoscale.
Driven by a passion for optics, Dr. Bing Yan has designed and constructed various optical systems, including light microscopes, laser scanning confocal microscopes, holographic optical tweezers, and optical fibre tweezers. His expertise in LIBS has also led him to explore the integration of acoustic levitators into LIBS systems, opening up new possibilities for material science research.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bing Yan has been at the forefront of developing advanced optical techniques and instruments. His work has not only advanced scientific understanding but also has practical applications in fields such as imaging, materials processing, and spectroscopic analysis.
With a deep commitment to pushing the boundaries of optical technology, Dr. Bing Yan continues to explore new avenues of research, collaborating with colleagues and students to unlock the full potential of light-based technologies.
